A short fixed base Andalucian bike trip!
Cycle inland Southern Spain at our Home base
This package is a must of anyone wanting to experience the best of authentic Andalucía and train.

Starting from Alhama de Granada, explore this scenic country area with a number of loop rides to nearby natural parks, towns and small villages. The mountain scenery combined with open expanses makes for some stunning viewpoints. Alhama itself is a great place to be based with its plethora of bars and restaurants, the magnificent gorge to explore, Sierra walks and the natural hot baths to take a soak in.

After time in the rural setting of Alhama, head off onto your other travels, or continue the tour for another couple days and include the grand city of Granada (bags transferred for you), home of the Alhambra Palace.

The next day embark on one of the great climbs in the world – the Sierra Nevada. Test yourself as you have the chance to ascend the highest road in Europe, the Pico de Veleta.

A great way to end the week!

Outstanding cycle trip in Alhama. Great road bikes, accommodations were top notch, and all details were addressed. Maggie and Geoff have an excellent knowledge of the area, and the itinerary they arranged of cycling and walking tours was very enjoyable.

This was our second trip with them, and it won’t be our last. Highly recommended

Challenging Ride: 75 km | Elevation Gain: 1400 m | Moderate:  35 km / 600 m or 50 km / 945 m

Transfer from Málaga or Granada to arrive in ancient Alhama de Granada, evocative in its medieval past and and surrounding sierras. Enjoy cycling to a shimmering lake, edging along the Sierras of Alhama, and travelling through the small farming villages of the area. There are enough category climbs in the area for the keenest of cyclist.  Don’t worry, we can keep you all day on the bike if need be!

Day 3. LOJA MOUNTAINS LOOP

Challenging Ride: 113 km  | Elevation Gain: 1350 m  | Moderate: 104 km | Elevation: 1150 m

Enjoy the many ascents and descents on the way to the city of Loja and its Sierra. The road from Alhama winds its way down to the fertile valley below of asparagus before a good climb up for vistas of the many craggy peaks around. For a snack, try Loja’s famous sugared donuts with a strong coffee. A good long 16km ascent back to Alhama to really work those legs out.

Day 4. ESCAPE TO MONTEFRIO LOOP

Road Cycling Montefrio, Andalucia, Spain

Challenging Ride: 120 km | Elevation Gain: 1550 m | Moderate: 78 km | 1090 m

This loop to Montefrio is also a visual feast with a good ride through small villages. Climb a shady route, used in the Vuelta a Espana 2010, before slipping down into pretty Montefrio, its church and castle standing precariously on a rocky outcrop. National Geographic has even listed it as “Best views of a village” in the World! Prepare for a gentle but long climb back up to your base in Alhama. Shorter loop ride for Moderate riders.

Day 5. ONWARD TRAVELS (OR ON TO GRANADA)

Cycling in Southern Spain

Challenging Ride: 90 km | Elevation Gain: 1100 m  | Moderate: 66 km | Elevation: 780 m

If short of time, this is the end of your training in the Granada region and you can take transportation back to Malaga or Granada. If not enjoy the ride to Granada via the Suspiro del Moro, the poetic sigh of the Moor, the last king of Granada as he left. Take in the immense Sierra Nevada and Mulhacen peak ahead and enjoy tonight in this thoroughly cosmopolitan city.

Day 6. SIERRA NEVADA & THE PICO VELETA AT 3394M!

Road Bike Tour to the Pico Veleta in Sierra Nevada

Challenging Ride: 90 km | Elevation Gain: 2000 m  | Moderate: go up as far as you want!

Granada cyclists and La Vuelta a España just love this climb and it is an impressive one. Not many in Europe come close to it. A few steep ramps to start you off if taking the shorter route or via Monachil, more than a few ramps but beautiful ascent. Whichever way you go up, it is a top climb. Right from city centre to snow cap peaks it is an amazing mountain to say you have ridden. Get over the 2500 m point, celebrate and keep going up to Europe’s highest road, Pico Veleta at 3394m. What an amazing descent.

Celebrate tonight, you deserve it!

Day 7. ONWARD TRAVELS

Road Bike Tour in Granada, Andalucia, Cityscape

Ride: 30 km | Elevation Gain: 550 m

Take a quick morning hammer session, out and back to Guajar Sierra before you, lock up the bike, start to pack up and check out.We hate to see you go and have a great onward journey or get on down to Málaga to do some coastal cycling!

Reviews

“Great team, great bikes, lovely routes We’ve been looking for somewhere good to hire bikes in the Alhama area and Geoff and Maggi and the team at Cycling Country are all we could ask for: passionate about cycling, delightful to deal with, really knowledgeable about the area, and with the bikes and the routes and the back-up that we wanted. Their main business is organising longer bike trips (e.g. guided tours for a week following the route of the Vuelta, with guides, full back-up and accommodation booked in advance) but they were very ready to hire us hybrid bikes for the day from Alhama. So we did – and did the 50km loop they recommend, out to the south and east of Alhama and round Lake Bermejales. Much of the route we did know, on mostly quiet and well-surfaced routes, though their suggested route also took us out onto some small roads even we’d not discovered before which were delightful. The bikes are good ones and well-maintained, they supply handlebar bags, helmets, locks, water-bottles and basic repair kits and pumps, and their maps & directions are excellent. We were delighted and are keen to use them again given we’re out in the area for 6-8 weeks a year – and they’re happy to do multi-day hires and to allow customers to put bikes in the back of a car etc and then drive to an area elsewhere to ride. They’re a pleasure to deal with too (thanks so much guys!). Strongly recommended.”

“Great Self-Guided Day Trip The British-Canadian duo who run Cycling Country were super friendly and really professional. We arranged for two hybrid bikes to do a one-day self-guided tour around Alhama de Granada. They provided us two very nice bikes, helmets, water bottles, repair kit, very detailed directions, an odometer, a map, elevation chart, and a great booklet of local history. They had three routes, 30k, 50k, and I think 100k. I’m an amateur cyclist and I did the 50k. It was challenging because there are lots of low but long hills, but I managed it! The views of the olive groves and distant Sierra Nevadas were really beautiful. Perfect weather in late October, too. I think it was a great value and would definitely recommend them.”
